Japanese automakers were once pioneers in hybrid and electric vehicle technology, but competitors from other nations have since surged ahead.
To better understand the technology and cost efficiencies of these rival EV models, Japan’s trade authority has invited various Japanese companies to conduct in-depth studies of models like the BYD Atto 3, Nio ET5, and Tesla Model Y.
BYD, like some other EV makers, has taken a unique approach by producing nearly all components in-house rather than relying on external suppliers. Furthermore, crucial parts such as the electric motor, inverter, onboard charger, and other components are consolidated into a single unit. This integration reduces the need for multiple parts, ultimately saving space, lowering weight, and driving down manufacturing costs.
